Designed for beginners, this 4-week course teaches simple steps for drawing realistically from observation. This course is also suitable for more experienced artists who want a thorough overview of the fundamentals of classical drawing.

Just grab some paper and a pencil, and follow along with Sadie’s clear, encouraging, step-by-step instructions for drawing a rose and a small bird figurine. Once you can draw shapes and shade them, you can draw anything you see!

Four weeks is an average estimate for the length of time it takes most beginners to work through the lessons. All our courses are designed to work through at your own pace: You can pause, restart, and re-play as often as you like.

If you are a Feedback Member you can post your work for review twice a week for instructor feedback.

This course can be completed in a sketchbook or on a pad of drawing paper, working at a desk or table. When you complete this course you will be ready to start Intro to Classical Drawing, which is done working upright at an easel.

For this course you will need:
Paper (any sketchpad or drawing paper)
Pencil (medium-softness HB recommended)
Eraser (any kind)
Pencil sharpener (any kind, but Sadie uses a Blackwing sharpener)
Printer
Some lessons require printing an image with a standards home printer at 8.5 x 11 inches

Optional helpful tools:
Pencil extender (for making a short pencil longer)
Trace paper or translucent vellum paper
Kneaded eraser
Retractable, pen-style eraser
Retractable cutting blade for sharpening your pencil
Sandpaper for sharpening your pencil
